Planet Jupiter

  • Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system, with a diameter of approximately 142,984 km (88,846 miles).
  • Jupiter is a gas giant, made up mostly of hydrogen and helium, with no solid surface.
  • Jupiter has the shortest day of any planet in our solar system, with one rotation taking only about 9 hours and 56 minutes.
  • Jupiter has a very strong magnetic field, which is about 20,000 times stronger than Earth's magnetic field, and produces intense radiation belts around the planet.
  • Jupiter has a large number of moons, with at least 79 known moons orbiting the planet, including the four largest: Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto.
  • Jupiter's largest moon, Ganymede, is the largest moon in our solar system, and is even larger than the planet Mercury.
  • Jupiter is known for its distinctive striped pattern of clouds, with alternating light and dark bands that are caused by different wind speeds in the planet's atmosphere.
  • The Great Red Spot is a giant storm on Jupiter that has been observed for more than 300 years, and is larger than the size of Earth.
  • Jupiter has been visited by several spacecraft, including NASA's Voyager and Galileo missions, which discovered evidence of a subsurface ocean on Jupiter's moon Europa.
  • Jupiter plays an important role in our solar system, as its strong gravitational field helps to protect Earth and the other inner planets from potential comet or asteroid impacts.
